Underground Mining

The manganese is accessed through two vertical shafts. The main shaft is 9m in diameter and intersects the ore body at 281m. This shaft is used for staff, machinery access, the inlet of ventilation and the hoisting of ore. The secondary shaft or vent shaft is 6m in diameter, this is used for return of ventilation and serves as an emergency exit.

The mine is designed to produce 3 million tons of run-of-mine ore per annum. The ore is drilled, then blasted, loaded and hauled to mobile crushing stations, then reduced to 150mm. The ore is then transported by conveyor belt from the crushing stations to the shaft silos, from there it is hoisted to the surface.
